Hi, all! Time for your Wednesday update on the rules of Beyond the Aether! This week we are covering the Victory Calculations that underly determining which nation is "winning" the game of nations.
At the end of each game, all the actions taken by that nation during the game are totaled up. When Developments come in, those are added to the mix. This gives a nation that lagged behind during the game a chance to catch up. The nation with the most points gains a Victory Rank. The first nation to seven Victory Ranks wins.
With a couple of exceptions, all of these are reset to 0 between games. Exceptions will be noted, but generally points don't roll over.
Let's begin!
Missions: 20 points for a successful mission, 10 for a failed mission.
Economic Growth: 5 points for each time your nation has met its trade goals in all previous games. If your nation has succeeded four times, you get +20 points at each calculation.
Developments: 5 per Development spent on a script/story that is associated with that nation's Principle. This means that developing scripts that oppose your nation helps your enemy.
Pact Signatory: 5 points per pact category signed. Pacts have five categories: Free Trade, Open Borders, Shared Research, Non-Aggression, Mutual Defense. Bonuses are one time only and once used can never be acquired again by pacts with the same nations.
War (does not reset to 0): 10 points for declaring war, 15 if you have a casus belli, 5 points if someone declares war on you. These points degrade at a rate of two per game, and can go negative. Once peace has been had for a full three months, the counter resets.
Territory: 1 point per piece of territory you hold at the end of a game.
Philosophy Tags: 1 point per tag spent on boosting your nation, -1 point per tag spent undermining your nation. This cannot go negative.
Sacrifices: If a character from your nation permanently dies, your nation gets +7 points per full game weekend that character participated in.
Evil Empire: If you have the most Victory Ranks, -20 points.
Underdog: If you have the least Victory Ranks, +20 points.
Other categories will be added and points values will be changed to reflect player actions. Any updates will be posted here and edited into this post.
News about the current standing of the nations will be available for one Development.
